From capable editor to confident professional.
Your training was just the beginning. SciEdit Pro gives you the advanced skills to refine biomedical and medical manuscripts, the professional systems to work efficiently, and the relational confidence that makes you indispensable to the authors you serve.
Where the fundamentals end and real growth begins
Most editors enter the field the same way: through a training program, a graduate degree, or by learning on the job. You pick up the fundamentals, develop an eye for clarity and precision, and start building your skills editing biomedical and medical manuscripts.
And then the path forward gets harder to see.
Few training programs teach you how to build a systematic editing workflow.
Few prepare you to navigate a difficult conversation with an author, handle feedback diplomatically, or manage a project from intake to delivery.
And fewer still hand you the frameworks that make editing faster, more consistent, and more professional.
Many editors piece it together over time — through trial and error, and without a trusted mentor to help them navigate the challenges along the way.
The good news is that the gap doesn't have to slow you down.
SciEdit Pro gives you the advanced editing frameworks you won't find in any other training program, the professional systems that make your work more efficient and consistent, and the mentorship and community to support you every step of the way — so you can build a confident, rewarding career.

Hi, I’m Crystal!
I'm a former biomedical scientist and clinical researcher who — like many of you — did not get adequate writing or editing training in graduate school. That experience shapes everything I do as a scientific editor, educator, and communication strategist.
I've spent more than 15 years editing scientific and medical writing and more than 25 years teaching in the sciences. I'm the founder of Redwood Ink and an international speaker, and I've helped thousands of researchers, clinicians, and scientific communicators hone their writing and editing skills.
But here's what actually matters: I know what it feels like to navigate the challenges of editing without a roadmap — to figure out systems, workflows, and author relationships largely on your own. And that struggle isn't a reflection of ability — editing well and collaborating with authors are skills, and they can be learned and refined with the right guidance.
I designed SciEdit Pro to give biomedical and medical manuscript editors and writers the training, mentorship, and community they need to build confident, rewarding careers. I want to give you what I wish someone had given me.
Frequently asked questions
-
SciEdit Pro is designed primarily for biomedical and medical manuscript editors and writers in the first five years of their careers — whether you're just starting out or building on a few years of experience. That said, editors and writers at any stage who want to deepen their manuscript editing skills, build better systems, or strengthen their author relationships will find value in the program.
-
SciEdit Pro is an advanced program for editors and writers who already have a solid grasp of English fundamentals. This program will go beyond spelling and grammar to give you strategies and systems to elevate your substantive and line editing skills.
-
SciEdit Pro is designed to fit into a busy professional schedule. Most members spend between 1 and 3 hours per week engaging with the program — but how you use that time is flexible. You might spend one week focused on course modules, another attending a live event, and another working through the event library. The program is self-paced, so you can engage as deeply as your schedule allows.

We think so — and here's why.
For freelance editors, independent substantive editing of biomedical and medical manuscripts typically pays $500–$1,500 or more for new and early-career editors. With the advanced skills, professional systems, and relational confidence you build in SciEdit Pro, you could land new clients, retain existing ones, or justify higher rates — paying for your membership many times over.
For in-house editors, the return looks different but is equally real. The frameworks, systems, and author relationship skills you develop in SciEdit Pro make you a more effective, confident, and valuable contributor to your team — the kind of growth that can lead to a raise, a promotion, or new opportunities within your organization.
Beyond the financial return, consider what you're getting: a flagship course built around frameworks you won't find anywhere else, twice-monthly group mentoring and monthly group coaching from an experienced editor, personalized feedback on your real work, and a supportive community of biomedical and medical editors and writers.
Programs with even a fraction of this support regularly cost $1,500–$2,000 or more per year. SciEdit Pro brings it all together in one place — at a price designed to be accessible to early-career editors and writers.

University certificate programs provide a strong academic foundation in editing and are a great way to build core skills. SciEdit Pro is different in three important ways:
Mentorship. University programs teach editing concepts, but they don't offer ongoing, personalized mentorship from an experienced editor. In SciEdit Pro, you get twice-monthly mentoring sessions and monthly group coaching from someone with deep experience in both in-house and freelance biomedical and medical manuscript editing.
People skills. Editing isn't just about the text — it's about the relationship with the author. SciEdit Pro specifically trains you in the relational skills that make you effective and indispensable: how to run discovery calls, craft author queries, navigate difficult feedback conversations, and foster long-term collaborative relationships.
Ongoing community. University programs offer a cohort experience that ends when the program ends. SciEdit Pro gives you an ongoing, supportive community of biomedical and medical editors and writers — people who understand your work and show up for you long after the coursework is done.
If you've completed a university certificate program and want to take your skills further in the real world, SciEdit Pro is the natural next step.

These organizations offer valuable trainings and conferences that support scientific editors.
SciEdit Pro is different in three key ways:
Advanced learning. The curriculum is designed to build on the fundamentals of editing by giving you an editing system and additional trainings on other tasks managed by manuscript editors. You’ll learn strategies and frameworks that you won’t find in any other training program.
Supportive mentorship. Many editors are expected to learn on the job, which can be especially difficult for small editorial teams and freelancers. In addition to the curriculum, members get opportunities to apply what they learn, as well as ongoing mentorship from a seasoned editor with both in-house and freelance experience.
Ongoing community. Rather than a one-time event, this program includes a supportive community to help you navigate challenges, find solutions, and celebrate milestones as you work toward accomplishing your goals.
If your goal is to learn the fundamentals of editing or get broader editing exposure, other trainings may be best for you. If your goal is to specialize in editing scientific and medical manuscripts, this program provides that dedicated support.
-
The group coaching sessions will cover topics that will help you streamline your manuscript editing workflow and build collaborative relationships with the authors you support. The topics will include:
Planning discovery calls and project intake
Designing cover and style sheets
Crafting author queries
Creating project checklists
Using tools of the trade
Creating document templates
Setting boundaries
Fostering the editor-author relationship
Navigating common ethical challenges
and more!

At any point after you complete the Scientific Writing Simplified course and during your enrollment, you can submit a manuscript or section of a manuscript for written feedback through the Redwood Ink Academy platform. Each sample can be up to 5,000 words and can include any biomedical or medical manuscript type, such as an original research manuscript, case report, or study protocol. Crystal will return detailed, actionable feedback within approximately 2 weeks. You'll receive feedback on two samples total during your membership year. If you have a longer manuscript that you’d like reviewed, you may submit one sample of up to 10,000 words in lieu of two shorter samples.
You might be wondering why course completion is required before submitting a sample. Self-paced courses have notoriously low completion rates — often just 5%–15%. This requirement is designed to help you actually finish the course, so your feedback sessions are as valuable and actionable as possible.
-
Although SciEdit Pro will primarily focus on manuscripts, the Scientific Writing Simplified course and the Redwood Ink Academy also include trainings on grant proposals and other document types. Also, the skills you learn in the program will apply to anything that you write, down to the emails you send.
-
You will have access for 1 year after the date you enroll. After 1 year, your subscription will automatically renew on an annual or quarterly basis until canceled.
-
Yes! We welcome people from all over the world. We are US-based, and all our events are held between 9 AM PT and 6 PM PT. All events will be recorded and available for replay in the event library.
-
We know that some people might not be able to afford the SciEditPro program, and we don’t want the price to exclude people who are passionate about becoming expert editors.
That’s why we’re offering scholarship options to people who can show enthusiasm and passion for a career in biomedical and medical manuscript editing and who'd benefit from the program.
